Instant Coffee

Instant-Coffee Instant CoffeeInstant Coffee is a popular drink prepared from the brewing of coffee beans. After going through various processes the coffee is dehydrated into a powdered form that when rehydrated with hot water gives the aromatic beverage. The biggest benefit of instant coffee is the short time it takes to prepare the drink, mainly for its dissolving in hot water instantly. It requires less powder quantity compare to the roughly ground coffee or beans to prepare same amount of coffee. Moreover, this instant coffee powder has more shelf life than the roughly ground coffee and coffee beans. But it has to be kept dry, preferably in tightly closed containers else it gets solidified to be wasted for it has the ability to absorb even the atmospheric humidity. The taste of instant coffee differs to a great extent from the taste of roughly ground coffee. In the Instant coffee powder, the caffeine content will be less and bitter components are more revealed. For commercial preparations, it uses a high extraction method to retrieve all properties from the roasted coffee beans.

History of Instant Coffee

The Instant Coffee was first invented by a Japanese scientist Satori Kato in 1901. George Constant Louis Washington, made his own instant coffee shortly and marketed commercially. The renowned brand Nescafe came up with upgraded coffee refining process in1938.

The most simple and easiest way of preparing coffee is undoubtedly by using the instant coffee by simply adding hot water to coffee powder to make your drink  ready. Instant coffee comes in a powdered or granulated form, packed in jars tins or sachets. Instant coffee is prepared through a vigorous extraction of all soluble material from ground coffee beans. It can be used for making iced coffee in warmer climates and hot seasons as well.

Roasting

The green coffee beans have to be roasted before using as coffee of any form. When the beans are roasted they bring out the flavor and aroma that are pertinant to rich coffee. Roasting cylinders, which use hot combustion gases are used for roasting the green coffee beans.

Grinding

This is the process, whereby the beans are reduced to very small particles say of the size of 0.5-1.1mm. These particles are added to a solution along with water, wherefrom it goes to the drying stage. This process is called extraction. The rollers used for grinding are designed to cut rather than crush the beans.

Extraction

In the process of extraction, water is added in 5-10 percolation columns between the temperature of 310 to 360 degree F to concentrate the coffee solution .This solution is concentrated before drying, either by vaccum evaporation or freeze concentration.

Drying

Drying is the most important stage in this process. There are two types of drying, one is the freeze drying and the other, spray drying. Freeze drying in instant coffee is the process of removing water by sublimation. This method is very popular, though a bit expensive. However, it gives good quality product. In the freezing stage, agglomerated wet coffee granules are frozen. The freezing has to be done very carefully because if freezing is done very fast or very porously the colour of the coffee granules gets affected. This frozen coffee beans is placed on a metal tray in a drying chamber. It then goes into a vaccum chamber, the vaccum created in this chamber is in relation and quality of the product. The drying chamber is warmed by the method of radiation. The water content in the granules expand to 10th of its size because of condensation. The water vapour thus formed, is removed in the freezer drying plant. The freezer dried granules are now removed from the chamber and sent for packaging. The spray drying method is less costly than the freeze drying method. It takes less time to dry and at the same time gives uniformly rounded particles.

A Cup of CoffeeToday, Coffee is one the most popular energy drink around the world, if not the most. The same celebrated coffee, which is prepared from roasted seeds called coffee beans. Coffee orginated in Ethopia from where, it spread all over the world. The coffee berries contain the coffee beans, when ripe are picked up, processed and dried. Then the dried coffee seeds are roasted. During the roasting process, it undergoes many chemical and physical changes. More, in the roasting process, it is treated in different temperature levels for acquiring different flavours and subsequently ground and brewed for a perfect cup of coffee. The coffee can be prepared in different methods and a variety of desired flavours.

Coffee has influensed societies through out the history, It is still used amongst some African and Yemenese tribes in their relegious ceremonies. Coffee, throughout the history, has been an important trade good. It really flourished that in a market study, which was undertaken in 2004, it was found the leading export of 12 countries. By value  it was rated the seventh biggest legal agricultural export of the world, in a 2005 survey.

History of coffee

Roasted Coffee BeansThe Ethopian shepherds observed the effects of their goats after the latter lot went through a diet comprising coffee beans. They found that these wild coffee berries increased the energy levels of the goats that they virtually, started dancing. Coffee, that perhaps was first processed in around the Ethiopian highland plains later spread to Egypt and Yemen. Incidently, in Arabia the roasting and brewing of coffee beans were first done in the same manner as we do now. In 15th century, Coffee spread to Northern Africa, Middle East Asia, Persia and Turkey. Later, coffee spread to Italy mainly due to the trade that flourished in those days betweenVenice and Middle East and Egypt and North Africa. However, it was from Venice that it spread to the rest of Europe.

Coffee in UK

An Old Coffee house of BritainIn 16th century Coffee became available in UK due to British East india Company’s trade relations with the rest of the world. The St. Michael’s Alley in Cornhill, the first coffee house in England opened around those days, the proprietor of which, was a man called Pasqua Rosse who was a servant of Daniel Edwards, a renowned coffee trader of those times. Edwards was a roaring trader, who imported coffee as well as helped Rosse to start the first coffee house in England. Gradually, coffee shops became hot properties of the English society that, in 1675 there were more than 3,000 coffee houses in England. These coffee houses later spread prolifically in Europe and from there to the  American mainland quiet soon.

Then, what was the historical ordeal between women and coffee? The forbiddance of woman folk visiting coffee houses was not universal, though medieval England witnessed a like incidence when their women were banned from accessing the coffee houses. A lot of people believed that coffee contains medicinal properties as a few writers in that period, took pain to mention it in their writings too. Nevertheless, it cannot be accepted blindly that everyone was  in favour of coffee  as the famous petition of women against coffee of 1674, rightly substantiates. In this complaint , a number of highly-deemed English ladies clearly stated their desperation that their men were reduced to mere impotents, stripping off their vigour by the long term coffee abuse, triggered by the myriad coffee houses of England.

Coffee Grinder- The Perfect Way for a Rich Cup of Grinded Coffee

September 17, 2008

Everyone likes to have the fresh and rich cup of coffee with a perfect aroma. A good coffee grinder fulfills your demands for a fresh cup of coffee. Grinding coffee beans instantly, and making coffee offers you the freshest coffee possible. It is possibly the best way  to have a fresh cup of coffee.

When buying a coffee grinder, you have to give prime preference to  your needs. If your need is less than 10 cups then you should go for a less powered motor grinder. When the requirement increases you have to go for a better powered motor grinder. The suitable appliance will serve you long and a wrong grinder will burn out within a year. Another thing you have to consider is the blade size and number of rotations in a minute. The grinder with big blades and less number of rotations can give you better output than the same capacity grinder with a high speed motor. It assures fresh coffee and avoids burning of the coffee. The coarseness of the grind determines the brew cycle and it can affect the taste of the coffee.

A big coffee grinder may not be the faster one, even though it accomodates big blades and less number of rotations for a good result. The ideal grind of course will give you the best results. There are 3 basic types of coffee grinders available in the market, blade, burr and conical burr grinders.

Blade coffee Grinders

Blade coffee grinders are the cheapest grinders available in the market, it will be suitable for you, if you do not use it for an espresso. One disadvantage of using this coffee grinder is that it gives inconsistent results and it cannot be used for making espresso. The cleaning and maintenance of this grinder becomes easier. A considerable problem with this device is that the high friction of these Blade coffee grinders often cause burning of beans and provides less tasty coffee.

Burr grinders (Flat Wheel)

Flat panel coffee grinders are the most frequently used coffee grinders. It crushes the beans between one stationary and one spinning semi-concave disks. These disks have less speed than blade grinders, which avoids friction and offers you consistent grind. There is a chance of these beans getting stuck on the way to grind and you need to stir to ensure proper grinding.

Burr Grinders (Conical)

These conical burr grinders are considered as the best grinders available, they use a conical shaped grinding surface. It can provide the most consistent grind than other grinders. The slow spin speed avoids friction and ensures rich coffee. The cleaning of the appliance is a little difficult compared to other grinders. The cone part is that conical burr grinders are expensive due to the high cost of grinding cones.

Grinding coffee beans before making coffee always seems to be a tough job, though it is worth to meet your demands for fresh and fully flavoured coffee. There is no doubt about the aroma and richness of the grinded coffee and it makes you a fan of coffee.
